SEXUALLY ABUSED CHILD

Child SEXUAL ABUSE

Sexual abuse is among the most serious issues that face children and youth today. The specter of child sexual abuse is frightening to parents and caring adults. Sexual abuse steals so much from children, robbing them of trust, innocence and security. Addressing the problem of child sexual abuse directly and responsibly is important to fostering appropriate awareness of this difficult topic.

Childhood is a pivotal time in human development, more so than any other phase of life. One of the biggest social stigmas attached to a society is that of child abuse. All forms of violence, abuse and exploitation have long-lasting consequences on children’s lives. Slowly India is becoming increasingly aware of violence against children, especially sexual abuse.

A child’s mind begins with their brain, and their brain begins with a structure morphologically similar to an adult. While physical growth is perhaps the most obvious change during this time, neurological growth is an even more critical—and more complex—process.

• Sexual abuse can cause serious problems in childrens and teens. It may cause depression and anxiety problems. Sexual trauma can trigger persistent feelings of sadness and hopelessness. Victims who are struggling with depression may experience additional symptoms like weight loss or gain, agitation, increased crying and a loss of interest in things they once enjoy.  This anxiety can lead to panic attacks and serious anxiety disorders.

Parents do not always talk to their children about body safety early enough. They think kids are too young. It is too scary. But it is never too soon, and it doesn’t have to be a scary conversation

• Tell your child how to get out of scary or uncomfortable situation.

• Tell them that some body parts are private.

Tell them that their private parts are called    private because they are not for everyone to see

• Tell your child body boundaries.

• Tell your child that body secrets are not okay.

• Tell your child that no one should take pictures of their private parts

• Tell your child that a body touch might tickle or feel good.

This is an important point to discuss with your child. Knowledge is a powerful deterrent, especially with young children who are targeted due to their innocence and ignorance in this area.  And one discussion is not enough. Find natural times to talk with them.

And please share this article with teenagers and those you love and care about and help me spread the message of body safety!
